The IGCSE years at Trio World Academy are Grades 9 and 10, with external examinations held at the end of Grade 10, after which students earn a globally recognised certificate highly valued by universities and employers worldwide. It is important that students choose their subjects wisely. Overall, their best choices will be the subjects that they enjoy most and in which they think they are most likely to be successful. However, there are some subjects that are either essential, or at least very important, for certain careers. If students have plans at this stage to follow a particular career, they must find out what subjects are needed so that they do not choose an inappropriate combination for their future studies.
Things students ought to consider include:
Does a subject really interest the student? Why? Students need to be interested in the subject matter and enjoy the skills involved in it. For example, does it involve extended writing, or is it a more practical subject? In addition, students should consider how the subject will be assessed.
What are the student's strengths and weaknesses? Students should look at their latest school report and be clear about the subjects in which they have been most successful so far and why this is. They ought to consider which skills come more easily to them.
Although the IBDP is more than two years away, students' decisions now may affect the subjects they begin studying in Grade 11 in August 2028. For most subjects, it is vital that if students wish to take them at IBDP level, they must select them for IGCSE. While not recommended, it is possible to skip certain subjects (for example, History) at IGCSE and take them up for IBDP; however, this is only the case in exceptional circumstances.
Group-1 to Group-3 are mandatory subjects.
Note 1: In Group-1, students can either choose English Language and Literature OR English as a Second Language ONLY.
*Students taking English as a Second Language (ESL) will also take this option in place of a Foreign Language in Group-3.
Note 2: First Language English students study 9 IGCSEs. ESL students study 7 IGCSEs.
From Group-4 to Group-8, students can choose one subject from each group.
Note 3: For Additional Mathematics, prior evidence of success in Mathematics is required and acceptance onto this course is subject to approval by the Head of Mathematics.
